D-Glucosamine
Glucosamine is a natural compound that is found in healthy
cartilage. Current research supports the use of glucosamine sulfate
to treat osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee.
Uses:These uses have been tested in humans or animals. Safety and
effectiveness have not always been proven. Some of these conditions

Safety:Avoid if allergic or hypersensitive to shellfish or iodine. Some
reports suggest a link between glucosamine/chondroitin products and
asthma. Use caution with diabetes or history of bleeding disorders.
Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effects:
Upset stomach, drowsiness, increased risk of bleeding, insomnia,
headache, skin reactions, sun sensitivity, nail toughening,
abdominal pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, flatulence
(gas), constipation, heartburn, diarrhea, high blood pressure,
increased heart rate, palpitations, increased risk of cataracts.
Possible interactions:
Drugs that alter blood sugar levels, diuretics (water pills) like
furosemide (Lasix), drugs that increase the risk of bleeding like
aspirin, anticoagulants ("blood thinners") like warfarin (Coumadin)
or heparin, anti-platelet drugs like clopidogrel (Plavix),
non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil),
naproxen (Naprosyn or Aleve), herbs or supplements with similar
effects (like arginine, cocoa, ephedra, juniper berry, kava,
shepherd's purse, sweet clover, turmeric, vitamin E).
